For the longest time I have wanted a dutch oven and earlier in the week I ordered one! After the semester ended I sold one of my text books to Amazon which resulted in some 'store' credit. I had been looking for a new ceramic cookware set in addition to the dutch oven and I think I narrowed it down to this ceramic set. Ultimately I really only needed to replace my large skillet, I guess the technical term is "chicken fryer" (at least according to this set), but since it's always so hard to go strictly off reviews we selected the chicken fryer by itself. How quickly and easily it is to spend $100 on cookware!
WELL! They both arrived and I am so very excited! And what should one do when they receive their new dutch oven (or any other cast iron cookware)? Seasoooooon it! I mean, at least the box told me to do it. Where my EVOO at?!
While I'm so happy to season some shit my kids are happy to paint some shit. Craft birdhouses to be exact!
If you just recently bought a dutch oven and haven't used it yet the seasoning process is super duper simple. You rub some cooking oil on the exposed cast iron edges on the pot itself and around the edge of the lid and then bake it for an hour at 350ºF (note that the time and temperature may differ from brand to brand).
Putting my bare skin along the edge was the feeling of nails on a chalkboard so I just used a damp paper towel and applied the oil that way. I didn't drag it around, but blotted.
And now for the girls' craft hour! Brendon was out and about for a project he was working on and had to make a stop at JoAnn's. Kennedy found these little bird houses for herself and Piper. Here I was expecting some frilly girly colors but what do they bring home? Neon blue and neon green. Ain't no dullness in their bird house painting game!
They are really SO bright. Piper kept getting upset when her hands got messy with paint so she didn't get very far after Brendon helped her with the roof. Ken was very serious and worked very hard on hers. Unfortunately we didn't think the paintbrush situation all the way through and each of them had one foam brush to work with and the colors slowly but surely began to resemble tie dye. Because all hell obviously breaks lose when you suggest that they take turns with each color.
And when you're a nosey puppy you're bound to get some paint on that little nose of yours.
Hunting for recipes!
