4th of july times two: a photo series

Last Friday the girls and I kicked off Independence Day celebrations with the firework show in our town - well technically. They were shown as being scheduled at the Milan Dragway. Upon further inspection I realized that there were a ton of car events being held prior to the fireworks; for whatever reason I didn't think of this as a possibility. So, before we headed out to scope out the scene granny joined up with us and we headed to the store for "cookout" fixin's.

Oh goodness, when we got there and parked (a football field away from the drag strip) we could hear the cars and smell all their exhaust. It was way too loud and the girls were not diggin' it. So, we setup our blanket, chairs and grub right in the parking lot behind my car and hoped we would still be able to see the show. Hence the whole 'technically watching the fireworks show.'

Overall, the view of the 'boom booms' was not the best, but it wasn't the worst. Ken was entirely too excited for the sparklers I bought and we ended up lighting a couple boxes off before the sun went down. Piper held her first sparkler (with a very watchful eye) and she taught us all how NOT to eat a chicken leg.

Then when the actual 4th was upon us we celebrated yet again. I tried to get the girls a little festive with some red, white and chambray and I think they looked pretty cute (even if they can't stand to look or smile for the camera). My mom completely outdid herself with the amount of food she grilled for everyone. The girls enjoyed some pool and trampoline time and we ended the evening with strawberry shortcake.

I cannot stop cracking up at this picture. Like what is she doing?!

By the end of the day Kennedy was a total crab apple and Piper was a champ at double fisting stolen watermelon bits.
